The Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing Prevention Act obliges the Estonian FIU to raise awareness and train investigators, prosecutors, and judges among others. Likewise, the strategic goal of the FIU is to strengthen the cooperation among Estonian authorities as well as internationally, and to be the centre of competence for the prevention of money laundering and terrorism financing in Estonia.
„I am pleased, that one of the top experts in the world, Yehuda Shaffer, contributes to reaching the goals of the Estonian FIU, as he has done previously,“ said Matis Mäeker, the Head of Estonian FIU.
The seminar focuses on the requirements and expectations of international standards. According to Shaffer, effectiveness and risk-based approach are the key issues in the world for preventing money laundering. „I believe that updating this knowledge is important to the Estonian colleagues, especially at a time, when the state faces the evaluation of the anti-money laundering processes by the international committee of MONEYVAL,“ Shaffer added.
Yehuda Shaffer is the former Head of Israel FIU, and former Deputy State Prosecutor, who has carried out tens of international evaluations concerning anti-money laundering procedures, and he trains those, who evaluate the implementation of international standards.
As of 1 January 2021, the Financial Intelligence Unit is an independent government agency under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Finance with the mission to prevent money laundering and terrorist financing in Estonia.
