On 23 March 2023 the U.S Ambassador to Estonia George P. Kent visited the Estonian Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU). The U.S Ambassador discussed cooperation on preventing cross-border money laundering with the head of the FIU Matis Mäeker and deputy Markko Kard.

The leaders will meet again during the three-day Estonian FIU Conference, which starts on 29 March with opening remarks by Ambassador Kent.

“It was my pleasure to meet with Director Mäeker and Deputy Director Kard to discuss Estonia’s recent Moneyval evaluation and the FIU’s work to make the financial sector safer.  Especially as we work together to shutdown Russia’s war machine, the FIU is doing important work to ratchet up sanctions enforcement and aggressively working to combat money laundering.  I look forward to participating in next week’s FIU conference as we continue to develop our cooperation on these critical issues,” said the U.S. Ambassador to Estonia George P. Kent.

The head of the Estonian FIU Matis Mäeker acknowledged the cooperation with the competent authorities of the U.S. “During the times of full military aggression by the Russian Federation in Ukraine, it is with outmost importance to assure that the illicit assets are not made available to the criminals, nor will the war machine be funded. Extensive fight against kleptocracy and financial crime is now more meaningful than ever. The FIU stands pleasingly side by side next to the U.S. partners in this fight,” said Matis Mäeker.

The first Estonian FIU Conference will be held 29–31 March and brings to Estonia several renown experts and consultants from across the world. The conference aims to raise the anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing capabilities of Estonian public and private sector.
