Matis Mäeker values the recognition highly. “It is indescribable, what that means to me. The past year was truly difficult, but this is why I work – for the country of Estonia,” said Mäeker and added, that the strong teamwork of the Estonian Financial Intelligence Unit is definitely worth recognition as well.
Matis Mäeker has been the head of the Estonian Financial Intelligence Unit since 14 June 2021. During 2012–2021 Mäeker worked for the Estonian Financial Supervision Authority as an Anti-Money Laundering Expert and the Head of the respective unit. He has developed new supervisory methods and guidelines for the agency and led inspection teams, that have significantly reduced money laundering risks in the Estonian financial sector. Matis Mäeker is a member of the MONEYVAL Bureau, Council of Europe; a Certified Expert at Financial Action Task Force (FATF); an Effectiveness Evaluator of AML systems in several countries; a member of The Egmont Group. Matis Mäeker has participated in the work of the AML Committee at the European Banking Authority (EBA).
On behalf of the Republic of Estonia, president Alar Karis expresses gratitude by handing out badges of merit to the people, that have made Estonia better, friendlier, more caring and protected.
