The mission of the Financial Intelligence Unit, resulting from legislation is to collect financial intelligence, as well as in analysing it, to identify money laundering or terrorism financing, so that the result thereafter can be forwarded to law enforcement authorities. The Financial Intelligence Unit in cooperation with the public as well as private sectors, thus prevents and hinders the use of the financial system and economic space of the Republic of Estonia for money laundering, terrorism financing and evading financial sanctions.
“We have established for the years 2022-2026 three main strategic aims: to be the risk analysis centre and influencer of risk management in the state; thereby implementing more intelligent and digital solutions; as well as to be the centre of competence for the prevention of money laundering and terrorism financing in the Republic of Estonia”, said Matis Mäeker, the Director of the Financial Intelligence Unit.
“The Financial Intelligence Unit is a growing and developing organisation that strives towards dialogue, innovation and visibility, and values also in its employees the expertise, intelligence and courage to be an influencer”, added Mäeker.
As of 1 January 2021, the Financial Intelligence Unit is an independent government agency under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Finance. Matis Mäeker was appointed as the Director of the Financial Intelligence Unit on 14 June 2021, at the proposal of the The Top Civil Service Excellence Centre.
